School profile and context:

Sorell School is the oldest continuously operating school in Australia. It commenced operation in 1821, fourteen years before the first settlement in Melbourne. Our school is situated in the township of Sorell about 27km east of Hobart and 10km from the Hobart Airport. Both school and township are named after the Second Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemen's Land, Colonel William Sorell. We are situated on the Tasman Highway, which is a favoured tourist route to Tasmania's East Coast and the convict ruins of Port Arthur.

At Sorell School we aim to work as a community of learners where everyone is supported and challenged to achieve their personal best. We believe in the ability of our student s to be confident, lifelong learners - literate, numerate, active, healthy and engaged. We want everyone to realise they can make a difference - in their own lives and in the lives of others. We aim for our students to leave Sorell School as proud, successful and socially responsible citizens, ready to take on the challenges of life in the twenty first century.

Program description:

In 2014 Sorell School commenced implementation of a Big Picture Inspired Academy with thirty-four Grade nine and Grade ten students organised into two grade group Advisories. Big Picture Education is one of a range of approaches informing our ever evolving and engaging learning provision, preparing every student to be a proud, successful and socially responsible citizen, ready to take on the challenges of life in the 21st Century.
